Your bowel habits say a lot about you. They can give a good indication of how well you are eating, sleeping and feeling.
When your bowel habits are out of sync you will certainly notice as it has a big impact on your quality of life.
So what is normal? Actually there is no such thing as normal, it is more about what is comfortable and usual for you.
However, less than 3 times per week is defined as constipation while passing 3 or more stools per day is defined as diarrhoea.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is diagnosed as having pain when you open your bowels at least once per week for the past 3 months. This should also occur alongside a change in frequency and appearance of your stools.
Dietary changes with support from a dietitian can significantly help with IBS symptom control.
Importantly because these symptoms can also be a sign of more serious conditions such as bowel cancer, coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease make sure your GP is aware.
